Ustadaha Noura M. Shamma grew up in the American Midwest, Italy, and Saudi Arabia with her Egyptian father and American mother. She has a B.S. in Elementary Education with a minor in Spanish from the University of Cincinnati and a M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies from Indiana University. She also obtained a four-year Elementary school teaching certificate from the State of Ohio Department of Education. Ustadha Noura spent a semester studying Arabic at the American University of Cairo and two years at the Qasid Institute in Amman, Jordan, where she completed the highest level. She has completed coursework for a Ph.D. in Islamic Thought through the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization in Malaysia.
While growing up, Ustadha Noura was involved in MYNA from its early beginnings and acted as a counselor, advisor, and coordinator. She was also active in the local MSA and led study circles for both girls and women. Her first introduction to traditional learning was at the 1998 Rihla Deen Intensive in Fez, Morocco, where she studied aqida, fiqh (Maliki and Hanafi), tajweed, and Arabic grammar. She then moved to California where she spent two years studying at Zaytuna Institute with Shaykh Saled bin Siddina, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, and Dr. Thomas Cleary. Since 2003, she has been studying Hanafi fiqh, aqida, and Arabic in Amman. Among her studies in Jordan have been: Maraqi al-Saadat with Shaykh Sohail Hanif; Jawhart al-Tawheed with the commentary by Imam al-Bajuri with Shaykh Akram Abdul Wahab, for which she was given an ijaza; Sharh al-Waraqat in Usul al-Fiqh with Shaykh Akram Abdul Wahab; Nur al-Idah and the Ibadat sections of Fath Bab al-`Inayah with Shaykh Faraz Rabbani; ulum al-Quran with Shaykh Ali Hani; and Hadith with Shaykh Ahmad Abdul Jabbar. She is currently reading Muktasar al-Manar in usul al-fiqh with Shaykh Ashraf Muneeb.
Ustadha Noura’s teaching experience has included working as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for Arabic at Indiana University, teaching literature at the International Academy of Cincinnati, teaching at the Granada Islamic School, and leading numerous study circles. She has also reviewed and edited textbooks for the Foundation for the Advancement of Education and Learning. She currently serves as the Course Operations Manager for SunniPath Academy, ensuring that courses run smoothly once the term begins and supporting the teachers, teaching assistants, and the Course Development Manager. Ustadha Noura is particularly interested in fiqh, usul al-fiqh, sirah, history, and children’s education. She lives in Amman.
