“In marriage, you're either pleasing Allah 24/7,
or displeasing Allah 24/7.”
—Ustadha Hedaya Hartford

Maintaining a healthy, nurturing marriage can be challenging in our day and age. We live in a world of instant fixes, yet marriage is a life-long commitment that takes effort and patience. Tranquil marriages are becoming increasingly rare in our communities, leading us to ask ourselves - what went wrong? But more importantly, we need to ask - how can we make this better?

Marriage as Allah Most High intended is a means for earning His Pleasure, and one of the delights of this world.

“Among His signs is that He created for you spouses of your own kind in order that you may repose to them in tranquility and He instilled in your hearts love and affection for one another; verily, in these are signs for those who reflect (on the nature of the reality).”
(Ar-Rum: 21)

Despite the beauty of an Islamic marriage, many Muslim couples are facing enormous difficulties. To address this growing societal concern SP launched a revolutionary course “The Successful Islamic Marriage” last year with Ustadha Hedaya Hartford. In this course she teaches what every Muslim needs to know about marriage.

Whether you are married or not, single or divorced, the topics she covers bring you self-awareness, helping you to correct bad habits. This will in turn improve your interactions with your spouse, in-laws, and children, enhancing your existing relationships.

If you are not married, studying with Ustadha Hedaya will teach you what to look for in a spouse, helping you start off your marriage on the right foot. You will also gain insight into what kind of person you need to become in order to sustain a happy marriage. Best of all, by actively taking steps to improve your character, you will earn the pleasure of Allah Most High, inshaAllah.

The Successful Islamic Marriage will equip you with the skills necessary to initiate and sustain a marital life which is pleasing to Allah Most High.

The lesson overview includes:

  • Basic fiqh of marriage
  • Basic fiqh of divorce
  • Choosing a spouse
  • Types of communication
  • Triggers and dramas
  • In-laws
  • Staying married
  • Analyzing marital issues/problems and destructive habits

It has been one of our most popular courses, filling up each semester.

Some courses, such as courses in the Arabic department, have multiple sections. Sections are basically different live session timing options, so that you can choose the timing most suited to your schedule. You do NOT need to register or attend all sections. What Her Students Say

Here is just a small sample of what some of Ustadha Hedaya's students have said about the course:

“I would recommend this course to others because marriage has a minefield of potential fitnah that can be avoided with the guidance contained in this course. It was both a helpful journey which helped me to grow in many ways and adjust my thinking about marriage but would also be especially useful to anyone prior to getting married. There are many aspects of marriage - the contract, rights, obligations etceteras that are clarified and revealed in this course, much knowledge in regard to marriage isn't transmitted through familial relationships anymore, a lack of knowledge can bring disaster into the home. This course should prevent that inshaAllah.”
—Lisa Mohammed-Irvine, Housewife, Margate, Great Britain

“This course was beneficial in many ways. Most importantly, it gave me an understanding of the fiqh of marriage and divorce, which is personally obligatory knowledge for those who desire to get married one day and for those who are already married. After this class I have a better understanding of the roles of each partner in a marriage, what one should bring to a marriage, and what one should leave behind. I left the class understanding how important marriage is to fulfilling the Sunnah and how much work and effort is required to make a marriage work so that we can be pleasing to Allah in our marriages. Before the class, little did I realize that a marriage is a way to worship Allah, and can be a means of drawing nearer to Him. This course is a must for everyone who wants to get married and those who are already married.”
—Maryam Chahine, Student, Amman, Jordan

“This course helps people operationally develop their own lives according to to the Sunnah. You don't need to be married (or seeking marriage) to benefit from the character development skills taught throughout the course.”
—Moaz Alam Choudhury, Healthcare Worker, Toronto, Canada

“Those like myself who have studied fiqh, spirituality, and Arabic can truly benefit from the practical knowledge of learning how to successfully live with your spouse. Everything you have learned from those valuable subjects were used to assess questions & solutions to having a psychologically and spiritually healthy home. This class is for anyone who may be struggling with peace in the home or who are living in marital comfort, both marriages will only gain perspective on the larger picture at hand & how to recognize bad behavior to God willing gain a righteous outlook.”
—Khadija Orta, Sacramento, USA

“I would recommend this particular course to others because not only does it provide an excellent coverage of the basic legal rulings surrounding marriage and divorce, delivered by a highly experienced and knowledgeable teacher, the course also highlights other important aspects of marriage that I have never seen elsewhere covered from an Islamic perspective e.g. recognising and dealing with different personality types and characteristics of people, which may be inherent in a potential or current spouse, as well as an understanding on how to deal with specific negative characteristics. This is a well balanced course and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to benefit from Sunnipath yet again, jazakAllah khayr!”
—Iffat Younus, Housewife, Kuwait City, Kuwait

“I would recommend this course to everyone whether they are single or married. It covers all aspects and situations. Even if you are already married and have a happy marriage I recommend doing this course so that you have all the information to advise others especially your children when it comes time for them to marry.”
—Sima Majzoub, Student, Sydney, Australia

“I would recommend this particular course to others because marriage is the completion of half our deen. Thus, it is an obligation for those wishing to get married to learn all the neccesary things for a blessed marriage. And this course is a fantastic way to learn all these neccesary things and ask all the questions you've been meaning to ask for years.”
—Mostafa El-Gashingi, Student/ Disability Support Worker, Sydney, Australia
